SS15 Fashion Trends Overview

Spring 2015 is full of Seventies fashion throwbacks, plus covetable statement denim and warrior-worthy accessories.

When I look at SS15, HIPPIE is what I
think of.

Colour palette

Colour for SS15 is exciting:

The poster's shades of red, yellow, blue and green felt positively raucous compared to the mute pastels of the past summer season. The all-over whites we’ve been seeing for two seasons have returned, most notably at Michael Kors, 3.1 Phillip Lim and Victoria Beckham, but they felt freshest when paired with slices of sunshine yellow, truest red, high energy blues and grassy green. The bolder still took these colours in their own right: a divine pair of billowing green pants at Delpozo, a fringed Yves Klein knit at Milly, Kors’ radiant yellow buckled smock and a traffic-stopping tomato skater dress at DKNY. The graphic combo of black and white attracted a big following: Narciso Rodergiuez, Opening Ceremony, Versus, Rodart - I could go on, but take my word,
it’s a trend.

Seventies Show

The crochet, the flares, the fringing! Dust off your lava lamps folks, for SS15 is going to be one big Seventies time warp. From Tommy Hilfiger’s retro fashion festival to Henry Holland’s groupie girl tribute, the references came in direct from the decade.

Key spring 2015 trend pieces: A billowing boho dress, flared trousers, clashing florals.

Denim Delights

Denim? A new trend?
It might sound like we’re stating the obvious, but designers were determined to put their own stamp on everyone’s favourite fabric this season.
Burberry worked it into cropped indigo mini-jackets while Stella McCartney built her entire collection around a series of statement-topstitch separates. Tod’s even fashioned it into slick tailoring. Totally office-appropriate, right?

Sweet Suede

As well as in more obvious Seventies stylings, suede appeared in some totally modern, even work-wear appropriate separates this season.
Pastel colours, super-fine weights and butter soft finishes to make the fabric
summer-ready.

The Disc Earring

More Pattie Boyd than Pat Butcher, statement earrings made a comeback at Emporio Armani, Moschino and Roberto Cavalli for SS15, after a winter dominated by subtle studs. Circles are the shape of the season - Armani stuck to a single drop while Louis Vuitton's clusters were backed with chains for a hard rock edge.

Power Flowers

Allow vivid floral prints to take over your entire look, right down to the accessories. Graphic bags reigned at Marni, Topshop Unique and Fendi, but the prize for best clash-off has to go to Valentino for those claret and cobalt combos.

Disco Platforms

Towering heels are back, say Saint Laurent, Tom Ford and Victoria Beckham – and who are we to argue with those glam (rock) gods? Team with a cool crop jacket, head-banger hair and a whole lotta attitude before you storm the stage.

SS15 Fashion Make-Up Trends

Bare-Faced

Marc Jacobs
Arguably the most frequently heard words backstage at the shows were "Natural", "minimal", and "real" - from the concealer-only look at Proenza Schouler to the wash-and-go hair at Dries Van Noten and Isabel Marant. This isn't the first time we've witnessed barely-there beauty backstage at the shows, but it is the first time we've seen models go onto the catwalk completely make-up-free, as they did at Marc Jacobs.

The Return Of The Red Lip

Top shop
Unique Lipstick fans rejoice, every imaginable hue of red was present at the spring/summer shows, after the almost entirely lipstick-free autumn looks. At Missoni it was orange-tinged, at Burberry Prorsum and Zac Posen it was bold scarlet and at Topshop Unique and Dolce & Gabbana the lips came in the richest of smudgy berry hues. Welcome back, old friend.

The Anti Cat-Eye

Narciso Rodriguez
Black eyeliner never goes out of style, but the way to wear it for spring/summer 2015 is from the middle of the eyes extended past the outer corners, as at Céline, Prada and Narciso Rodriguez or in a bold line underneath a la Just Cavalli. And not as a retro cat-eye - keep the line straight and strong for a truly graphic effect. Bored of black? Try Peter Philips' trick at Fendi and Christian Dior, where he applied strips of coloured plastic or fabric in the place of liner.

 High Shine

Marni
No more heavily-powdered matt skin - complexions were decidedly dewy at the likes of Marni, Simone Rocha and Donna Karan, with lipgloss used on the lids to reflect light at Thakoon and Blumarine. The word "sweaty" was even used at Marc by Marc Jacobs and Missoni, with Andrew Gallimore going as far as to create perspiration-like beads of gel to apply to the models' faces at Teatum Jones. See also Prabal Gurung, Jean-Pierre Braganza and MM6, where the sweatiness extended to the hair.
