The History of Harper’s Bazaar

When Harper's Bazaar was launched as a weekly journal in 1867, it was the first version of the modern fashion magazine in America and possibly the world. At the time, Paris had dominated the fashion industry.

While it took a long time for New York to truly be recognized as a fashion capital (which probably happened in 1943 when Eleanor Lambert created Press Week), Harper's Bazaar was one of the first steps towards both the New York fashion world as it exists today and fashion magazines as they exist today. The early issues of Harper's Bazaar was illustrated and contained information, not just on fashion, but also "women's interests"- subjects like etiquette and gardening. It was not until a full 25 years later that Vogue came on the scene.

When Harper's Bazaar began publication, it was a weekly magazine catering to women in the middle and upper classes. It showcased fashion from Germany and Paris in a newspaper-design format.

It was not until 1901 that Harper's moved to a monthly issued magazine which it maintains today. Now Harper's Bazaar is owned and operated by the Hearst Corporation in the U.S. and The National Magazine Company in the U.K. Hearst purchased the magazine in 1913.
